Founded by the Romans, Amalfi became one of the main maritime trading centers in the Middle Ages, thanks to its strategic position along the trade routes between East and West.
The artistic heritage of Amalfi is remarkable and rich in historical treasures. The Cathedral of Sant’Andrea, located in the main square of Amalfi, is one of the main attractions of the city. The church dates back to the 9th century and features a unique architectural style, with Byzantine and Romanesque influences. Inside the cathedral you can admire splendid mosaics, frescoes and the famous Cloister of Paradise. Another important artistic heritage of Amalfi is the Paper Museum, located in the city’s ancient paper mill. This museum tells the story of paper production in Amalfi, which dates back to the 13th century. Here you can admire ancient machines and learn about the paper production process. The narrow streets and characteristic colorful buildings of Amalfi are a real pleasure for the eyes, and many of these buildings date back to the medieval period. Walking through the streets of the city it is possible to discover small churches, historic buildings and suggestive panoramic corners that make Amalfi a truly unique and fascinating place.
